Who’s the real pound for pound king?

I just encountered this story on my Twitter feed and here are my thoughts.

Floyd Mayweather says he is ready for a mega-money fight with Manny Pacquiao and believes the new WBO welterweight champion is “one-dimensional”.

To quote some of his quotable reactions:

“If I beat Manny Pacquaio do you know what they are going to say? ‘You are supposed to beat him, you are Floyd Mayweather, you are the bigger man’. If I knock him out they’ll say ‘you’re supposed to knock him out he’s been knocked out before’.

“I’m in a no-win situation and when I beat him no one is going to be surprised because he’s been beaten before; whatever I do to Pacquaio has been done before – he’s been beaten on three occasions. And if I knock him out I don’t want the world shouting because he’s been knocked out twice before.”

If the fight goes ahead it is expected to challenge the mark set by Oscar De La Hoya’s bout with Floyd Mayweather for the most profitable in history.

Money generated from pay-per-view subscriptions earned the two fighters an estimated combined total of $77 million in 2007.

Mayweather, whose nickname is “Money,” said: “If I go out and make $60-75 million in one night; come on – I’m not losing.”

First off, I want to congratulate Manny Pacquiao for showing us a very stunning performance last November 15, 2009 (GMT +8:00) beating Miguel Cotto in Round 12 by a TKO decision. *Hats-off* to you man. Dominating and conquering seven World Championship weight divisions in the field of boxing just leaves me speechless and could only give you a round of applause. (woot!) Congratulations! You have my support.

Seriously, everything that comes out on Mayweather’s mouth is really pissing me off. Is he really that intimidated that people all over the world is recognizing Manny Pacquiao as the strongest fighter in Boxing? That there is a Filipino Boxer rising so fast on top that everything Mayweather has accomplished is already being disregarded and forgotten? That Manny Pacquaio is really the New Pound for Pound king??? What the hell Floyd Mayweather!! I highly respect you. You have a perfect record. I know you are a great boxer, but let’s face it sooner or later Manny will still reign as the number 1 boxer of all time.

In every interview, you always pinpoint that you have a perfect record, and that you don’t have any losses whereas, Pacman has 3 defeats in his record. But, let me ask you this question. Having said that, are you saying that after you’ve fought Pacman you’ll still have that perfect record? That the numbers are the only reference we could only have to distinguish who’s the better boxer or not?

Floyd Mayweather: Total fights: 40, Wins: 40, Wins by KO: 25, Losses: 0
Manny Pacquaio: Total fights: 55, Wins: 50, Wins by KO: 38, Losses: 3, Draws: 2

Now, can you see the difference? Your wins by KO is only 62.5%, but Manny’s wins by KO is 76%. 76% of Manny’s opponents have been knocked out. He has the stronger punch. In my opinion, also, the stronger boxer between the two of you.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather. I’m sure that sooner or later this fight will come and I know this will be one of the greatest fight of all-time. I’m not a boxing critic. All I could do is just base everything on your boxing professional record.

Make this a memorable fight, a fight that will really show who’s the stronger and the better boxer between the two of you and a fight that will make the time stop and make you two the center of everyone’s attention.

I will wait for this fight! Now, who’s the pound for pound king? We’ll see soon.
